Annual Outing Announced

ANNUAL OUTING – UPTON GREY AND THE VYNE (NR.BASINGSTOKE)

FRIDAY 29TH JUNE 2012

In response to a request in the “suggestion box” the annual outing this year will be to Upton Grey, an original Gertrude Jeykll garden, combined with a visit to The Vyne, a popular National Trust venue.  These gardens are on the outskirts of Basingstoke and therefore will not entail a long and arduous journey.

Due to lack of support on some previous outings the committee has no option but to work on a possible 30 members supporting this venture, which of course is reflected in the prices.   However, if sufficient members do support it then we may well be able to reimburse some of the costs.   The good news is that the Upton Grey price includes afternoon tea and if people are members of the National Trust then they will not have to pay the entrance fee to The Vyne (providing of course they are able to produce their membership cards on arrival).   We do please encourage you all to support this outing as your committee work hard on your behalf to make these outings interesting.

Full details of prices and itinerary will be available at the March meeting.

Fordingbridge Post Office depart 08.55am (other pick-ups available)

The Vyne Itinerary

10.30 a.m. arrive, when the café will be opened especially for members wanting tea/coffee on arrival.

11.00 a.m. sharp conducted tours of the house will be given (with sufficient guides for our numbers).

12 noon: garden tour/lunch – at members own choice.

2.15 p.m. depart.

Upton Grey

2.45p.m. arrive

Introduction to Garden by owner – garden tour – afternoon tea (included in the price)

4.45 p.m. depart.

Fordingbridge:

6.15 p.m. approx. arrive

This year it is a little different as far as pricing is concerned because some members will be National Trust members and will therefore not be required to pay the entrance fee.   So the prices are as follows:

FDHS and National Trust members:                   £18.50 per person

FDHS and NON National Trust members:        £27.00 per person

NON FDHS but NT members:                         £26.00 per person

NON FDHS and NT members:                        £34.50 per person

Please complete and return a booking form as soon as possible, together with your cheque made payable to the Fordingbridge & District Horticultural Society.

Next Meeting 26th March 2012 at 2.30pm

MARCH  MEETING

A timely reminder that the meeting on 26th March will commence at 2.30pm due to the unavailability of St Mary’s Hall in the evening. Our speaker will be Chris Evans, informing us ‘How to design successful flower beds for spring and summer’. The Table Show is ‘3 Daffodils’, and this is usually one of the most well supported Shows of the year.

Then in April we will be meeting on Monday 23rd at our usual time of 7.30pm, as St Mary’s Hall is not available on the last Monday of the month. The speaker that evening will be Colin Fryer telling us all about the National Gardens Scheme, what they are looking for in a garden, and what can be found. The Table Show in April is ‘One Spring Flower’.

next meeting monday 27th February 2012

Members of the Society next meet at 7.30pm at St Mary’s Hall on the above date for a talk on Orchid Cultivation by Roger Grier. This lecture will include photographs and a practical demonstration. Please bring along any orchids that appear sickly and those that refuse to flower.

Perhaps Roger will be able to offer appropriate advice. So don’t give up on your plants just yet!

Bring a neighbour or friend with you and let them see what a lively and thriving Society we are. There is no charge for admission; just tell them to buy a strip of raffle tickets!

After the event – the 2011 Annual Show

The results of the Society’s Annual on 16th Juy 2011 have recently been added to the web-site.

A couple of interesting comments have recently come my way which might just encourage you to take part yourself and encourage others. It may be just the impetus required to take part in the 2012 Show on 21st July 2012(DNM)

‘I entered a plant and won a first prize with it in 2011. That’ll encourage me to try and
do more in 2012. (JMS)

’2010 was my first attempt at entering items in the Show, and to my surprise I did quite well. That success encouraged me to enter again this year and do you know what, I won again! (HBS)

‘My lettuce are as good as those entered’ (anon) was another comment that I heard when walking round the Marquee on 16th July. Well, I thought, perhaps we will have another new exhibitor next year!

Check out this year’s results by looking at ‘A good effort by all’ on the ‘Home’ page.

The Schedule for 2011, which can accessed by clicking on ’2011 Annual Show’ on the the ‘Shows’ page, will remain there for the time being for future review.

Results of the 2011 Annual Show

“A good effort by all”. That was the comment about the Annual Show made by Show Secretary, Mrs Doreen James, before leaving the Horticultural Marquee just before 5.30pm on Saturday 16th July following an enjoyable day at the Recreation Ground with the Fordingbridge Summer Festival.

The entries were slightly down on the 2010 figures, but the Show attracted a greater number of exhibitors. The full results, on a class by class basis, can be seen by viewing this ‘pdf’ file:2011 Annual Show winners
